You guys need to relax….deep breath….exhale….
I tried all this, been doing the 3D thing for years…this…simply…does…not…work….
I've checked many forums, changed my env variables, blah, blah, blah….
If my original post seems a bit terse then this attitude comes from the amount of absurd, ridiculous waste of time that I spent on something that is NOT an issue with Maya or Blender (and likely the upcoming C4D plugin), but specific to Houdini. I don't know if it's a Windows 10 issue or what–but this should never be an issue when installing a plugin. It's like “we did the bare minimum to get this thing to kinda work–you guys are on your own.”
Having said all this, Houdini Indie is only $200 (I absolutely applaud this package), and Renderman is free. Me no stay awake at night ova' dis…..

Based on my research this has been an issue for some time; it's really nothing new. I contacted Side Effects support but they were zero help. I don't get it. I really don't. I've installed many plugins in various software over the years, but I have never seen anything like this. Should I really have to go into Windows and change the environment variables? Really? This is clearly a lapse on Side Effects, not Renderman–Houdini itself simply can't find the tools in Renderman.
I probably shouldn't complain because Houdini Indie is only $200/year and Renderman is free, but it really does bug me that they would market Houdini Indie now allowing Renderman use, yet it is unusable. Kinda shameful.
Anyhow, let's see how they handle the future V-Ray plugin…….

I contacted support and they didn't have anything to offer…strange. Perhaps Renderman for houdini just doesn't work for many. Simple as that.
I will say that I have never seen anything this convoluted before, in terms of getting a third party plugin to work. Weird….

Just tried installing RenderMan into the new Houdini 15.5 Indie, but get this when trying to render:
CreateProcess failed for ‘prman’
I added this to the Houdini Environment Settings file located in the Documents folder
RMANTREE = “C:\Program Files\Pixar\RenderManProServer-20.9”
PATH = “$PATH;$RMANTREE/bin”
Still nothing. The Houdini documentation itself is, well, cryptic at best.
Any thoughts? Anyone found a solution to this.

You can adjust those settings in Windows 10 (I disabled auto-updating, etc. as soon as I installed the thing.)
The problem was with Adobe Application Manager–it was set to update at 2am. Don't know why it screwed with Houdini (my computer didn't reboot.) At any rate, I disabled AAM somewhere in Windows (Windows Services?), can't recall……..problem solved.

It seems it has to do with the Adobe Ap Manager (I'm guessing), because it updates at 2am. I've since disabled it and we will see…
Also, I noticed your comment about the agent cam–I get it to work but when rendering the node states “unable to render this camera” (or something to that effect.) Other cameras render fine, but not the agent camera. Any advice on getting this cam to render?
Could it possibly be disabled in the Indie version (that would be most odd)?

This has never happened before (with C4D, Maya, or Houdini), but at 2:00am my rendering just stops–the last rendered frame states 2:00. Is there something in my system, maybe other apps, that may be causing this? This has happened only the last three nights. Very strange. I did install a daily build (15.0.280) a few days ago, maybe that has something to do with it….And I am a Houdini Indie user….

How were able to get this to actually render? I attached the agent cam and all is fine in the viewport, but mantra node (with the red error lines) states “unable to initialize rendering module with given camera.” I do have the camera set to /obj/agentcam/

Great. I figured there had to be a little button to push and whatnot. With C4D I don't need to tick anything in After Effects, but this is another example of me unconsciously trying to make a connection between Cinema and Houdini. I just have to approach Houdini on Houdini's terms.

The background (Envlight, Sky Environment Map enabled) renders to disk as transparent, but Mplay renders as it should. I have Googled this problem and most of the articles are 7, 8 years old, and don't really address this simple issue. I'm sure I'm missing something quite basic here, a button that needs to be pushed, etc.
If I render to disk in Jpeg format all is well, but not tif. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the info. I'm really not discouraged–yesterday it started to gel in my head, thus fewer crashes. Support sent me an email about my GPU and driver, possibly disabling my second monitor. I think it just comes down to knowing how to set things up and not piss Houdini off (pretty much standard for all 3D apps, no?)
I am finding Mantra to be a bit tricky only because it seems awfully simple compared to V-Ray, but that's not a complaint…I'm sure there is much to learn with that. Also–what's the deal with trying to render the background? Guess I'll figure it out in After Effects….
PS. The rag doll sims are hysterical…..

I figured there would a 2-3 month period of noob crashes and lameness. I was just reaching out for a little feedback and advice. It seems to me that I need to just figure it out for myself. So be it.
@Enivob–do you recommend the 353.30 driver? I just updated to the newest, but I do know C4D works better with older drivers…

I've spent the last week with Houdini, my first dive into it. I came with an open mind after spending 4 years with C4D; Cinema can be clunky with dynamics…
Overall I am enjoying myself, yet I am a bit frustrated with the constant crashes (especially with Crowd/Rag Doll sims.) It can't be my system because it is only a year old and fairly high end. Tech at Side Effects says it might be my drivers–but which one do I install (I've got a GTX780 and the drivers are up to date)?
Also, what's with the arcane error messages like Error Command Exit Code: 1? Hmmm…..Exit Code:1. Gotcha.
Cinema's online community really had me spoiled–with Houdini I've REALLY gotta dig to find enough resources and info online. (Is it me or is Orbolt kinda pathetic?)
I'm not giving up because even though these bugs can be a pain, Houdini still blows away Cinema when it comes to dynamics. I've barely scratched the surface and am not pretending to know a whole lot yet–but its potential is obvious…just hate the bugs…
